Slide show

On May 4th. Troy and Anita Smith shared the slides of their trip to the Smokey Mountains National Park with the FBC camera club. Some of the most beautiful country in the U.S.. Troy also shared his trip into the backside of Baxter State Park where he and some of his co-workers skied in for a winter camp.

Much thanks to the Smiths for their time to share their collection with us.

Is there a difference?

Recently I had a discussion with a photography friend about what I call “the dilusion of photoshop”. I happen to be one who believes that the picture you show should represent what you saw in the actual setting, not what you reworked in photoshop. So I said, “I dont think one should manipulate a picture in photo shop to make it something they really did not see in the field.” Of course the immediate reply was, “well you manipulate the picture in the field with filters and special affect lenses, what is the difference?” Hmmm ……. I had to think about that one for a moment.

I did come to a conclusion however, in the field the only thing you can manipulate is light and the physical arrangment of the subject matter by changing your position. You are, however, capturing the actual image and not recreating the image. Its like photographing a dinner plate, then in the computer putting the food on it, its artificial, the difference between a Balsam Fir Christmas tree and an artificial one, you can decorate them both but the only one that smells like the real thing is the real thing!

I don’t think I made any points with my friend, we agree to disagree. But that is photography, a purist vs a modernist. Each has its points I guess, but in today’s world where so much of what we see and hear is so artificial, so fake, I simply like to keep things real. The world is full of natural beauty, God’s handiwork, I simply don’t think we can improve on His work. Not to condemn Photoshopers, I just think if you can’t do it in the field maybe you are in the wrong line of work. Perhaps a canvas and some paints would be better for you.
